"Mutabilis", China Rose, 1894
  • This most interesting rose is ideally suited to illustrate the typical China trait of darkening with age, instead of fading. Nowhere is that trait more visible than in the flowers of ‘Mutabilis’, whose single petals open sulfur yellow, changing through orange to a rich pink and finally crimson. Bright, silky flowers of all these colors will often be on display at the same time, looking as if a group of multi-colored butterflies has settled on the bush. This aspect earned ‘Mutabilis’ its common name–"The Butterfly Rose". A healthy, well-branched shrub, ‘Mutabilis’ will easily grow to 6 feet, making a fine specimen plant whose showy flowers are accented by the bronze color of the new growth. The Mutabilis specimen in the photo is one of two at the entrance to Dirt & Roses. Both were planted from 2-gal containers, and have achieved a 4'x4' size in three years. The foliage is evergreen, and the rose continuously blooms from March to December. Mutabilis has been designated an "Earthkind" rose by Texas A&M in recognition of its' hardiness and ability to grow well in our Central Texas environment.
  • We currently have "Mutabilis" available in 2 and 3-gal. container size, along with more than ninety other rose varieties, including climbers, antique roses, and hybrid teas. We also have on hand a wide variety of landscape plants for Texas gardens and yards, and a great selection of premium mulches, blended soils, gravel and sand.
